Eero Aarnio studied in Helsinki from 1954 until 1957, after which the Finnish designer opened an office to support interior and industrial modern designs. His furniture remains some of the most innovative designs available on the market in terms of classic chairs with retro egg chairs mimicking the standard he set. Transitioning from fiber glass to safer plastic materials, his Ball Chair was ready for manufacturing a year after opening his personal shop and remains a popular item for modern homes. The futuristic industry of the 1960s inspired many shapes for other modern chairs as well.

Some of his designs from the 1960s captured the essence of popular culture at the time, offering science-fiction based designs used in films. His designs capture simple geometric forms making them ideal for 1960s science fiction films as well as modern classic use. While the initial designs remained the same as now, the materials used in the products has changed slightly. Later work replaced the use of fiberglass with plastic. Now, the modern classic chairs are created in safe manufacturing environments.

Aarnio’s designs have been showcased at exhibitions and solo exhibitions around the world. He had solo exhibitions entitled That’s it, at the Art Gallery Arvore, Porto in Portugal during 2001 followed by the Eero Aarnio, Kunsthalle in Helsinki, Finland in 2003. In 2004 he was featured in Oslo, Norway at the solo exhibition, Eero Aarnio – popfantasier og sittende dagdrømmer, Kunstindustrimuseet. He made his way to Denmark in 2005 where his solo exhibition, Forestil dig en rund stol, was showcased at the Danish Design Center in Copenhagen. That same year the Embassy of Finland showcased another solo exhibition in Washington, D.C., entitled Pop Fantasies: Furniture Design by Eero Aarnio. The same solo exhibition, Fantasías del Pop. El diseño de Eero Aarnio, made its way to Mexico City in 2007 at the Museo Franz Mayer. Germany showcased another solo exhibition at the Embassy of Finland in Berlin with “Retropop, Phantasie und Tagträume”.

Eero Saarinen is a Finnish industrial designer who lived from 1910 until 1961. He became famous for his modern classic chair designs which remained simple. He included arching structures alongside curves which swept and swiveled. As a child be began studying design and sculpting in the United States and in France. In the beginning of the 1930s he was able to tour North Africa and France, visited Finland, and returned to the United States. His creativity and unique designs were not only applicable to modern classic chair and furniture designs, but were utilized by the military for illustrations used by the Office of Strategic Services for bomb disassembly manuals. After the Second World War and the passing of his father, Eero Saarinen opened his own architectural firm.

He was first recognized for his chair designs while he was working under his father’s tutelage. Their chair design received first prize in the Organic Design in Home Furnishings in the year 1940. His design for the Tulip Chair, as well as his other modern chairs, was produced by the Knoll Furniture Company. Saarinen received additional attention for his work when he took first prize at the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. He continued to design furniture using organic architecture.

Eero Saarinen designed the famous womb chair to meet the demand for a comfortable chair in which to curl up. The Womb chair is constructed out of a reinforced shell molded from fiberglass and covered with foam. The ottoman portion is made from a plywood platform also covered with foam. There are separate cushions which each boast a foam core. There are standard, medium, and small sizes available. There are stainless steel glides and nylon articulating glides which complement the steel rod base and chrome finish. It can be upholstered with a variety of fabrics or leather.

The Royal Hotel in Copenhagen required a new design for chairs to be placed in the reception and lobby areas. In 1958, Arne Jacobsen fulfilled that requirement with the original egg chair. Since then, this egg chair has become an important facet of Danish furniture design worldwide. The egg chair is unique in that its shape offers users privacy that would otherwise be lost in public spaces. The egg, whether or not it is accompanied by the ottoman, is the ideal modern classic chair for homes, waiting areas, and lounges, particularly for those who want to keep their work or naps to themselves.

As a famous architect and designer, Arne Jacobsen initiated the Fritz Hansen Corporation in 1934. Jacobsen and Hansen’s names were moved to the forefront of modern furniture history in 1952 with the production of the Ant chairs and the Series 7 chairs. When the egg, the Swan, as well as the Series 3300 were introduced during the 1950s, Arne Jacobsen became an admired designer whose modern chair and furniture designs were considered a major part of international and national heritage.

The egg chair is designed to mimic an egg with a synthetic shell made from polyurethane foam, reinforced with fiberglass. The shell offers users an adjustable tilt which can be altered based upon the weight of the user. The base of the egg chair is a four star with a welded steel tube. It is injected into molded aluminum and has a satin-polish on the steel tube. The egg chair is upholstered with leather or fabric and can be produced with an automatic return mechanism. The egg chair is 33.8 inches in width, 31.1 inches in depth, and has a height of 42 inches. The seat is 14.5 inches high with a total cost of over six thousand dollars.

Arne Jacobsen is popularized for the egg chair design. Charged with designing a unique chair for the Radisson SAS hotel located in Copenhagen, Jacobsen produced the now-famous egg chair. Jacobsen employed the typical style with the egg chair utilizing only state-of-the-art materials. It is said that his egg chair design was inspired by the womb chair from Eero Saarinen. Sharing similar traits, the egg offers a complex design. The Egg chair was designed as a chair and a couch, though the couch version has only been seen on rare occasions. A few designs were released for the Radisson Hotel but the special edition versions run the cost of sixty thousand dollars.

The limited production of the egg-couch was not only due to the desire to remain exclusive but because making it remains very challenging. The couch is too large to be covered by two entire cow-hides, but the egg chair does not have this flaw, making it easier to produce. In this case, the couch version of the egg chair shows a visible stitching in the middle which is far from the Jacobsen spirit.

The Egg chair has become so popular because of its high quality and unique design that the McDonalds Corporation included one on a London-based restaurant as part of the redesign concept the company employed. Copenhagen included another egg chair in one of their McDonalds’ locations.

The Egg chair was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958. The materials used include foam, upholstery, and aluminum and was manufactured by the Fritz Hansen Corporation, owned in part by Jacobsen and Hansen, in Denmark. Arne Jacobsen produced the first egg chair in his garage using a plaster cast. Now the synthetic egg shell is padded with cold foam after which the shell is covered with fabric while the aluminum star-shaped base is covered with leather.

The Barcelona Chair is an exclusive chair design meant originally for the German Pavilion. It was designed as the entry for Germany into the International Exposition in 1929, an event which was hosted in Barcelona, Spain. The design for the Barcelona Chair came from Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich, his companion and partner in design and architecture. The chair quickly became an icon renowned for its modern conception and design, inspired by the folding chairs associated with ancient time periods.

The chair reflects the quality, promotion, and evolution of the German design industry which started to change in 1912. The chair was important because Lilly Reich as the first female member of the organization which was responsible for designing international furniture exhibitions. The designs for Deutcher Wekbund and the Barcelona Chair reflect the longstanding collaborations between Reich and can der Roche whose combined contributions offer a poignant and particular reflection in the world of modern classic chairs.

After van der Rohe moved to the United States, ending his partnership with Reich, he stopped producing furniture designs. Mies van der Rohe initiated his first furniture patent in 1927 and his last in 1937, never creating before or after Reich. It was because of their work ethic and ability to create such astounding designs that they were selected to design the German Pavilion for the event in Barcelona. The ancient designs incorporated into the Barcelona c hair paved the way for its perfect reception at the Pavilion. The chair was viewed by royal visitors who eventually deemed it a chair whose design was fit for kings. The original frame was bolted together but the design used stainless steel so that it offered a smooth appearance. Originally it used pigskin but this fabric has since been replaced by Bovine leather.

Eero Aarnia is renowned for his innovation in terms of modern classic chairs. Of Finnish descent, he was born in 1932 and since then has become popular for his plastic chairs and his fiberglass chairs. Having studies in Helsinki at the Institute of Industrial Arts, his personal office was initiated in the year 1962. The first innovation introduced by his office was the Ball Chair. This chair introduced in 1963 offers users a follow sphere design which is held in place through a stand. On one side it opens so that the user can sit inside of the sphere. The Bubble Chair, yet another Aarnia innovation was similar in its design but was clear instead of colorful and suspended from above rather than position on the ground through a stand.

As fiberglass became an important material for boat construction, Aarnio began to incorporate it into his modern classic chair designs. The material was resistant and was easy to mold to the desired shape. It soon became one of Aarnio’s favorite materials, allowing him to create ergonomic designs without any restrictions. With that, new designs began to arise such as the Pastil and Tomato Chairs.

Aarnio’s creative chair designs warranted the title of honorary professor by the President of Finland in 2007 followed by the Compasso d’Oro Design aware for another of his chair designs in Italy during 2008. That same year he took home the Kaj Frank Design Prize in Finland. 2010 was a busy year for his modern designs as he was awarded the Red Dot Design Award in Germany, the Pro Finlandia Medal in Finland, and the Green GOOD DESIGN for The Tree in the United States.
